Overview

  • Schaefer took the ice at the Islanders’ summer prospect development camp in East Meadow for the first time since suffering a broken clavicle in December.
  • He received coaching and feedback from former Islanders defensemen Dennis Seidenberg, Rod Pelley and Johnny Boychuk as part of his integration into the organization.
  • He has set a goal of earning a spot on the opening-night roster, which would make him the second-youngest player ever to suit up for the franchise.
  • The No. 1 overall pick flew directly from draft celebrations to Long Island on a private jet and received congratulatory texts from NHL stars Wayne Gretzky, Connor McDavid and Matthew Tkachuk.
  • Schaefer will participate in the camp’s public Blue and White scrimmage midweek as he continues his professional preparation.
