Overview
- Released on November 20, the CSA’s Matter 1.5 formally introduces camera support and expands the standard with closures, soil sensors, and enhanced energy features.
- The camera spec enables WebRTC live video and two-way audio, local and remote access, multi-stream setups, pan-tilt-zoom controls, and configurable motion and privacy zones.
- Clip storage and playback, as well as on-device AI analysis, remain outside the standard and will continue to be handled by device makers and platforms.
- Matter 1.5 adds TCP transport to improve reliability and firmware delivery for bandwidth-heavy devices, and lets products ingest real-time and forecasted pricing, tariff, and carbon data with EV charging improvements.
- CSA says many modern cameras could be retrofitted via software at manufacturers’ discretion; Xthings’ $199 Ulticam V2 is planned for late December, and Aqara expects its first Matter camera in the first half of 2026.
