Mattel Debuts First Barbie Representing Autism After 18-Month ASAN Partnership

Created with autistic advocates, the Fashionistas doll models supports that help many autistic people navigate daily life.

Overview

  • The doll is on sale in the U.S. now via Mattel Shop and Target for a suggested $11.87, with Walmart distribution set to begin in March and international rollouts scheduled later, including Mexico in July 2026 at about 329 pesos.
  • Design elements reflect common autistic experiences: a slightly averted gaze, articulated elbows and wrists for stimming, a functional fidget spinner, noise‑canceling headphones, an AAC tablet, a loose A‑line dress, and flat shoes.
  • Mattel developed the doll over more than 18 months with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, whose leaders praised the collaboration for centering authentic representation.
  • As part of the launch, Mattel said it will donate over 1,000 dolls to pediatric hospitals such as Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Rady Children’s Hospital in Orange County.
  • The release extends the inclusive Barbie Fashionistas line—previous dolls addressed Down syndrome, blindness, diabetes type 1, vitiligo, and prosthetics—and early reactions are largely positive, with experts cautioning against oversimplification and some packaging including educational materials.
