Mattarella Grants Four Pardons After Formal Review

The Quirinale says the clemency followed a justice ministry inquiry supported by favorable judicial assessments.

Overview

  • Gabriele Finotello received a full pardon that extinguishes his remaining four years and three months for killing his father in 2021, with the decision citing his health and a documented history of domestic violence by the victim alongside positive opinions from the Procuratore generale and the magistrato di sorveglianza.
  • Massimo Zen obtained a partial pardon removing three years and three months for a 2017 killing during a robbery getaway, leaving no more than four years to serve and making him eligible for possible probation, with the Quirinale noting his compensation to the victim’s family, health issues and a favorable supervisory-judge opinion.
  • Patrizia Attinà was granted a full pardon of roughly two years remaining on sentences for theft and extortion dating to 2012–2016, with factors including time elapsed, the offended party’s forgiveness in the most serious count, living and health conditions and a favorable opinion from the magistrato di sorveglianza.
  • Ancuta Strimbu received a partial pardon cutting one year and six months from sentences for extortion and drug offenses, reducing the remainder to no more than four years and allowing potential probation consideration, with the presidency citing family circumstances, prior successful social-probation performance and a favorable judicial view.
  • The Quirinale states all four decrees were issued under Article 87 of the Constitution after the required ministerial inquiry with a favorable opinion from the justice minister, and note that probation decisions rest with the Tribunale di sorveglianza under Article 47 of the penitentiary code.
