Matalan Recalls Squishy Dino and Unicorn Egg Toys Over Microbial and Choking Risks

Laboratory testing identified excess aerobic microbials alongside a bursting hazard, prompting an official recall notice.

Overview

  • The UK product safety alert, published on 20 November (PSD 2511-0211) and notified by Local Authority Trading Standards, confirms the recall from end users.
  • Affected items are PMS-branded Squishy Dino Egg (F163586, barcode 5050565670175) and Squishy Unicorn Egg (F163591, barcode 5050565670182) from batches 981187, 981189, 981197, 982866 and 982867.
  • Testing found the toys can burst during normal use, releasing small parts and an aqueous solution that contained excess aerobic microbials, posing heightened risk for immunocompromised users.
  • Matalan instructs customers to stop using the toys and return them for a full refund without needing a receipt, and the products have been removed from sale.
  • Regulators state the toys do not meet the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011; the products were sold between 31 March and 23 May 2025 and were manufactured in China.
