Massport Breaks Ground on Braintree Remote Terminal

The new facility is meant to let South Shore travelers check bags and clear TSA offsite so buses can bring them directly to post-security gates, easing congestion and travel stress.

Overview

  • Massport announced construction of a permanent remote terminal at the Braintree Logan Express site as part of a roughly $500 million renovation that includes two multilevel parking garages and is slated to open to passengers by the end of 2028.
  • The Braintree project builds on a Framingham pilot that began in June and that Massport reported served about 10,000 passengers during its early run, with the pilot extended through March 2027.
  • The Framingham pilot currently charges $9 each way, runs from 5:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is limited to travelers flying JetBlue and Delta, and Massport has not released updated ridership figures since July.
  • The remote-terminal model moves bag check and TSA screening offsite so secure buses can deliver passengers to the airport’s post-security areas, a change that reduces vehicle miles and aims to shorten time spent in Logan’s security lines while requiring coordination with TSA and airlines.
  • Airport officials from Philadelphia and Washington have visited the Framingham site to observe operations, signaling industry interest in wider adoption if the unresolved questions about carrier participation and expanded hours are settled.
