Massive Tornado Hits Nisswa as Statewide Watch Persists

The tornado watch remains in effect until 9:00 PM CDT with forecasters warning storms could strike Brainerd and metro suburbs.

Overview

  • The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch covering 34 counties, including Hennepin and Ramsey, effective until 9:00 PM CDT.
  • A massive tornado touched down in Nisswa and a large, extremely dangerous twister was tracked over Cuyuna Country State Park, 11 miles northeast of Brainerd.
  • All tornado warnings for Staples, Wadena and other central counties expired by 4:45 PM CDT, and no active alerts remained for Minneapolis or St. Paul as of 5:00 PM.
  • Forecasters caution that the Meeker–Stearns storm could reach the outer suburbs of the Twin Cities between 7:00 and 8:00 PM if it sustains its intensity.
  • Schools canceled after-school activities, emergency operations centers activated, and residents were urged to shelter in basements or interior rooms and avoid windows.
