Massive Protests in Slovakia Against PM Fico's Law Enforcement Reform

President Chaputova and European institutions express concerns over potential threat to rule of law and EU's financial interests.

  • Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of various cities in Slovakia to protest against the law enforcement reform proposed by Prime Minister Robert Fico.
  • Slovak President Zuzana Chaputova called the planned reform 'a serious threat to the internal security of the state' and called on the ruling coalition to submit the package of bills for discussion instead of approving them under the accelerated procedure.
  • The proposed changes include revising the criminal code, dissolving the Office of the Prosecutor, reducing punishments for corruption and some other crimes, and significantly shortening the statute of limitations.
  • The European Parliament and the European Public Prosecutor´s Office have expressed concerns about Slovakia’s ability to fight corruption and protect the EU budget if the changes are adopted.
  • Despite the opposition, the three-party coalition has a majority in Parliament, and President Chaputova's expected veto could be overridden by a simple majority.
