Massive Ocean Sunfish Washes Ashore on Oregon Beach

The 6.9-foot-long Mola mola, found at Hug Point State Park, has drawn significant attention from experts and locals alike.

  • The ocean sunfish, also known as Mola mola, was discovered at Hug Point State Park in Arch Cape, Oregon.
  • This is the third sunfish to wash ashore in Clatsop County since June, following two other notable finds, including a hoodwinker sunfish.
  • The Seaside Aquarium reported that the fish was 6.9 feet long, which is average for the species, although they can grow up to 10 feet and weigh up to 5,000 pounds.
  • The Mola mola feeds heavily on jellyfish, which are currently in abundance off the Oregon coast.
  • Local experts and the Seaside Aquarium are documenting these strandings to gather more information about the species and their occurrences along the coast.
