Massachusetts Unveils Finalists for New State Seal, Flag and Motto

Public hearings this fall will shape refined designs before December recommendations that would still need legislative approval.

Overview

  • The 10-member advisory panel published nine top options—three each for the seal, flag and motto—after narrowing 48 flags, 23 seals and 32 mottos from more than 1,000 public submissions.
  • Public feedback will be gathered at six hearings in September and October, with four in-person sessions and two virtual.
  • The Concord-based Eastern Research Group has been contracted to help translate feedback into final designs due in December.
  • Indigenous members on the panel urged visible Native representation and cautioned against symbols like the Mayflower that evoke colonial harm.
  • The motto finalists are “Multae voces, una res publica” (“Many voices, one Commonwealth”), “Bono publico laetamur” (“We rejoice in the public good”), and “We honor all life guided by the First Light.”
