Overview
- Cambridge this week designated six public-consumption zones — Central, Kendall, Harvard, Inman, lower Massachusetts Avenue, and Porter/North Mass. Ave. — allowing to-go sales from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. with ID wristbands and labeled plastic cups.
- Boston opened two Social Districts at Union‑Marshall Street and Temple Place with one 16-ounce drink per transaction limits and requiring businesses to file one-day amendments with the Licensing Board before serving.
- The temporary, state-authorized pilot also permits approved venues to apply for up-to-3 a.m. last-call extensions through July 31, and local licensing authorities can set conditions or immediately revoke participation for problems.
- Early nights produced heavy sales at World Cup watch parties and calm street scenes with no open-container–related arrests reported, but owners and staff raised concerns about enforcement, patrons leaving zones, outside alcohol and strain on transit and emergency services.
- State and municipal agencies will compile participation, revenue and incident data after the pilot ends to judge whether to extend or change the rules and how expanded outdoor drinking could affect local businesses and neighborhood safety.
