Mass UK Police Screening Leads to Nine Criminal Investigations
The largest-ever integrity screening was initiated in response to serious misconduct cases, with the Home Office funding continuous checks.
- A mass security screening of over 300,000 UK police officers, staff, and volunteers has led to nine criminal investigations, 88 disciplinary probes, and 139 vetting reviews.
- The screening was carried out in response to the murder of Sarah Everard by serving Metropolitan Police officer, Wayne Couzens, and the case of David Carrick, a serial rapist despite repeated concerns about him.
- The Metropolitan Police launched 58 disciplinary investigations, none of which required criminal investigation.
- The National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) said the exercise was the largest integrity screening project that policing has ever seen.
- The Home Office will provide funding so the scouring of the intelligence and data about police employees is continuous.
