Mass Russian Barrage Batters Ukraine’s Grid, Leaving Parts of Kyiv Without Power

Ukraine is escalating appeals to Washington for air-defense systems following strikes that darkened large sections of the capital.

Overview

  • The Ukrainian Air Force reported a wave of 465 attack drones and 32 missiles overnight, saying 405 drones and 15 missiles were intercepted.
  • Kyiv’s eastern bank lost electricity and water and metro service was suspended on the left side of the Dnieper as outages spread across nine regions.
  • Grid operator Ukrenergo cited a significant number of users without power and DTEK said thermal power plants were gravely damaged as repairs and assessments continued.
  • Authorities reported at least one death, a 7-year-old in the Zaporizhzhia region, and 33 injuries, while President Volodymyr Zelensky said cloud cover cut air-defense effectiveness by 20–30%.
  • A government delegation led by Prime Minister Ioulia Svyrydenko will travel to the United States early next week to seek air-defense and energy aid, after earlier strikes left up to 60% of gas production capacity offline.
