Mass Mobile Alert Test Reaches About 5 Million Across Barcelona Region

A review of network logs and citizen surveys now begins to pinpoint coverage gaps before real emergencies.

Overview

  • At 10:00 a.m. Monday, Catalonia’s Protecció Civil sent a tri‑lingual ES‑Alert test to smartphones in Barcelona and the comarques of Barcelonès, Baix Llobregat, Maresme, Vallès Oriental and Vallès Occidental.
  • Preliminary feedback from 600 survey responses indicates about 95% reported receiving the alert, while the 112 emergency line logged 122 related calls, mostly within the first 30 minutes.
  • The alert targeted all devices physically in the area, including those of travelers and commuters, and required users to tap the screen to stop the distinct alarm tone.
  • Officials reiterated that the tone can override silent mode and that phones switched off or in airplane mode generally do not receive the message, though behavior can vary by device.
  • Authorities will verify antenna and coverage data via the Interior Ministry and use combined findings to refine procedures, closing out this year’s simulation calendar after multiple real and test alerts in 2025.
