Overview

  • In late March in Chichester, McGarry sped at up to 60 mph in a 40 mph zone, mounted a pavement and struck a lorry during a five-minute pursuit, causing £1,200 of damage.
  • The 19-year-old admitted dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, driving while disqualified, failing to stop and driving without insurance.
  • Prosecutors highlighted McGarry’s 42 previous convictions for offences including robbery, burglary, assault of an emergency worker and two earlier dangerous driving incidents.
  • In February, PC Tim Bradshaw was acquitted of causing serious injury for a 2022 e-bike chase that injured McGarry and prompted the officer’s exit from Sussex Police.
  • Authorities and officers have raised concerns over the rising threat of illegal e-bikes and the challenge of safely intercepting riders who exploit narrow streets and alleys.
