Masked Violence Mars Tlatelolco Anniversary March in Mexico City

Police opened criminal cases in response to masked violence at the Mexico City commemoration.

Overview

  • Commemorations occurred in at least 13 states, and in Mexico City a masked bloc broke from peaceful marchers to hurl Molotovs and other projectiles, vandalize property and loot stores.
  • The city’s security chief reported 94 police officers injured, including three in serious condition, and emergency crews treated 29 civilians, among them several journalists.
  • Police expanded their deployment from about 500 to 1,500 officers to contain confrontations and protect parts of the Historic Center.

  • UNAM condemned damage to the Tlatelolco cultural center, Toluca saw a patrol car burned and detainees later released, and officials rejected allegations of excessive force while denying any police fatalities.
