Masked Group Vandalizes UNAM’s Ciudad Universitaria During Sept. 3 Protest

Days earlier, UNAM reported detentions over the July 20 damage, prompting tighter campus protections.

Overview

  • Around 50 masked youths marched from the “Bigotes” area to the Rectoría tower and vandalized campus facilities, breaking security booth windows and spray‑painting entrances to the Faculties of Sciences and Accounting and Administration, as well as the CCH directorate.
  • The demonstration marked the 2018 attack on students by alleged porros, and a later student contingent from La Bombilla marched to demand a comprehensive university reform and other measures.
  • UNAM information cited by local media indicates some participants included youths expelled after the 2018 violence at Rectoría.
  • The Sept. 3 damage follows the July 20 anti‑gentrification march in which masked protesters entered CU, shattered MUAC glass panels, and looted and burned books at the Librería Julio Torri.
  • UNAM has filed criminal complaints, FGJCDMX has conducted forensic work, and officials recently confirmed that individuals linked to the July 20 vandalism were detained and processed as the university implements new security and mobility protocols in coordination with city authorities.
