Masdar and OMV Seal Joint Venture for 140 MW Green Hydrogen Plant in Austria

The pact advances industrial-scale hydrogen to cut refinery emissions, paving the way for sustainable fuels.

Overview

  • Masdar and OMV signed a binding agreement to form a joint company that will finance, build and operate a 140 MW electrolyser in Bruck an der Leitha.
  • The ownership split is set at 49% for Masdar and 51% for OMV, with the agreement signed during ADIPEC 2025 in Abu Dhabi.
  • Construction began in September 2025 and commercial operation is targeted for 2027, marking one of Europe’s larger green‑hydrogen projects.
  • Formal establishment of the joint company is expected in early 2026 following completion of documentation and shareholder and regulatory approvals.
  • The project is intended to decarbonize OMV’s Schwechat refinery and support future production of sustainable aviation fuel and other synthetic fuels, building on OMV’s existing 10 MW electrolyser at Schwechat.
