• Hyogo Prefectural Police arrested 35-year-old Masashi Tanimoto of Shinjuku on suspicion of murder on Aug. 22 after Tokyo officers located him near JR Okutama.
• When found, he showed slight resistance to investigators, according to police.
• Authorities say he boarded a Tokyo-bound Shinkansen from JR Shin-Kobe in the 8 p.m. hour on Aug. 20 shortly after the attack.
• The victim, 24-year-old insurance employee Katayama Megumi, was stabbed in her apartment building elevator and died of blood loss from wounds to the chest.
• Police report no record of stalking complaints from the victim and are examining any prior contact, with investigative sources saying he followed her for more than 10 minutes before the assault.
