Maryland to Close Jessup’s MCI-J by June 2026

Officials cite $200 million in required repairs, projecting $21 million in annual savings.

Maryland correctional officers at Jessup Correctional Institution routinely had their timecards altered and were shorted nearly a half-million dollars in wages over a two-year period, a federal investigation showed. The U.S. Department of Labor is now investigating similar allegations involving other state institutions.

Overview

  • About 700 incarcerated men will be moved in phases to prisons including Maryland Correctional Institution and Roxbury near Hagerstown, as well as North Branch in Allegany County.
  • Roughly 300 employees will be reassigned to nearby Jessup facilities such as the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women and Dorsey Run, with the Department of General Services coordinating transfers with the union.
