Maryland State Police Probe Inmate Death at Jessup After Fellow Prisoner Identified as Suspect

Police say they will not release the suspect's name until charges are filed.

Maryland correctional officers at Jessup Correctional Institution routinely had their timecards altered and were shorted nearly a half-million dollars in wages over a two-year period, a federal investigation showed. The U.S. Department of Labor is now investigating similar allegations involving other state institutions.

Overview

  • Deon Smith, 23, was found unresponsive in Building F around 8 p.m. Saturday and was pronounced dead by on-site emergency medical personnel.
  • The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services’ Internal Investigative Unit notified the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit of the death.
  • Investigators say the suspect is also an inmate at Jessup, with public identification withheld pending charges.
  • Crime scene technicians from the state police Forensic Sciences Division processed the area for evidence.
  • Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be presented to the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
