Maryland Schools Evacuated as Flash Floods Strike Allegany County

Over 200 students and staff were rescued from rising waters as emergency teams responded to severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

Overview

  • Westernport Elementary School saw water breach the second floor, prompting the evacuation of 150 students and 50 adults using rescue boats.
  • Georges Creek Elementary students were relocated to a high school, while Westmar Middle School students sheltered in place during the flooding.
  • Flash flood emergencies were declared for Westernport, Luke, and Barton after up to five inches of rain caused Georges Creek to rise more than seven feet in six hours.
