Maryland Governor Signs Executive Order to Guide AI Use in State Government

The move aims to ensure responsible and ethical integration of AI in government work while bolstering cybersecurity measures.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore has signed an executive order to guide the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in state government and bolster cybersecurity.
The order emphasizes the need for fairness and equity in the state's use of AI, and mandates that state agencies consider the potential for AI systems to perpetuate harmful biases and take steps to mitigate those risks.
The executive order creates an AI subcabinet tasked with developing a plan to create appropriate guardrails for agencies' use of AI.
In addition to the AI initiative, Moore announced the establishment of the Maryland Cybersecurity Task Force, which will bring together cybersecurity experts from various state departments to foster a whole-of-government approach to cybersecurity.
Other technology-related initiatives announced include a new Maryland Digital Service, which will support website and application redesigns, and a new digital accessibility policy, ensuring equal access to state-procured and developed information technology and services for state residents.
