Maryland Air National Guard Inactivates A-10 Flying Mission After 104 Years

Gov. Wes Moore acknowledged mixed emotions over the mission's end.

Overview

  • An inactivation ceremony at Martin State Airport on Sept. 23 formally ended the A-10/A-10C Thunderbolt II operations for the 175th Wing.
  • The last two A-10s are scheduled to depart next week to join the Michigan Air National Guard.
  • Following the transfers, the Maryland wing will convert to a cyber mission.
  • State and federal efforts to keep a flying mission, including a proposed transfer of D.C.’s 121st Fighter Squadron, did not materialize.
  • The inactivation leaves Maryland as the only state without an air mission, as officials thanked airmen and reflected on the unit’s decades of service.
