Maryam Nawaz Launches Faisalabad Electric Buses as Rawalpindi Rollout Stalls Over Charging Gaps

A low-fare program with free travel for priority groups faces delays where charging stations and terminals are not yet ready.

Overview

  • Punjab’s chief minister inaugurated the service in Faisalabad, announcing 150 electric buses for the division: 90 for Faisalabad, 30 for Jhang, and 15 each for Chiniot and Toba Tek Singh.
  • The fare is set at Rs20, with free travel for children, students, women and senior citizens, and dedicated seating areas for women.
  • Rawalpindi’s planned delivery of 87 buses has been pushed back due to unfinished charging points and the pending decision on a central terminal, prompting cancellation of the Sept. 30 launch visit.
  • Sargodha has begun operations using a temporary charging station, with 48 buses received and 33 running in the first phase, raising capacity concerns until a permanent port is built.
  • Launch events doubled as political platforms, with Maryam Nawaz vowing to defend Punjab’s rights and framing the e-bus rollout as a flagship public-welfare initiative.
