Mary Sheffield Publicly Sworn In as Detroit’s 76th Mayor, First Woman to Lead the City

She set an early course focused on neighborhood investment with a new Office of Gun Violence Prevention.

Overview

  • Sheffield took the public oath at the Detroit Opera House on Jan. 9 in a sold-out, free investiture that drew residents, faith leaders, and local performers.
  • The ceremony also swore in City Clerk Janice Winfrey, Detroit City Council members, and police commissioners, with performances by Kierra Sheard, Brianna J. Robinson, the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences, and poet laureate Jessica Care Moore.
  • In her remarks, Sheffield emphasized priorities including affordable housing, good-paying jobs, reliable transit, and safety rooted in prevention and accountability, with attention to how safe residents feel in their neighborhoods.
  • She highlighted transition work involving more than 300 Detroiters across 18 committees and said the administration has launched a newborn and mother cash program described as the largest of its kind in the nation.
  • Sheffield plans to maintain select Duggan-era initiatives such as Down Payment Assistance and Motor City Match; she had been privately sworn in on Jan. 1 and succeeds Mike Duggan, now running an independent campaign for governor.
