Marvel's Echo series introduces a new origin story for Maya Lopez, a.k.a Echo, who is portrayed as a Choctaw woman with powers passed down through her matrilineal lineage.
The series incorporates Choctaw folklore and iconography, including the Biskinik bird and the 'coiled snake' spiral symbol, which appear when Maya uses her powers.
Each episode of Echo begins with a flashback to one of Maya's ancestors, who awaken great power within themselves and pass it on to Maya.
The Choctaw Nation has expressed approval of their representation in the series, noting that Choctaw consultants, artists, and writers were involved in its development.
Echo is currently streaming on Disney+ and Hulu.
