Romita Sr. took over as artist for The Amazing Spider-Man in 1966 and helped define the look of Peter Parker and other iconic characters.
He served as Marvel's art director for decades and worked with Stan Lee to develop new characters like Luke Cage and The Punisher.
Romita Sr. began his career in 1949 and worked for both Marvel and DC Comics, gaining renown for his work on romance and superhero comics.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, and two sons, including fellow comic book artist John Romita Jr.
