Maruti S-Presso Becomes India’s Cheapest Car After GST 2.0 Price Cuts

Maruti passed through GST 2.0 cuts from September 22 to deliberately reposition the S-Presso at the very bottom of its range.

Overview

  • The S-Presso now starts at Rs 3.50 lakh ex-showroom, undercutting the Alto K10 entry variant at Rs 3.70 lakh by about Rs 20,000.
  • Select S-Presso variants see reductions of up to roughly Rs 1.2–1.3 lakh, with the LXI (O) CNG now listed at Rs 4.62 lakh.
  • Maruti’s updated price list took effect on September 22 with full pass-through of GST 2.0 benefits and additional cuts on some models.
  • GST 2.0 lowered taxes on many sub-4 metre petrol cars to 18% and removed the compensation cess, enabling the first major small-car price rollback in years.
  • The S-Presso continues with two airbags, whereas the Alto K10 and Celerio get six as standard, a specification gap that helps explain the pricing spread.
