Marsha's Will Close After One Year in Philadelphia

Owner Chivonn Anderson said social-media fallout led to a steep drop in customers that made the business unsustainable.

Overview

  • Anderson announced on Thursday that Marsha’s will shut its doors after the coming weekend with final service scheduled for Oct. 16–18.
  • The bar opened in September 2025 at 430 South Street and was promoted as a Black, queer, women-owned venue dedicated to showing women’s sports and serving LGBTQ+ patrons.
  • In April 2026 a former manager, Olivia Rhodes, publicly accused staff of facing transphobia and retaliation and was fired days after raising concerns; another former employee, Seisha Mason, later filed an EEOC complaint and the bar’s general manager resigned.
  • Anderson has denied the allegations, said the business cooperated with a February police inspection that found it in compliance, launched an internal review, held community listening sessions, and disputed online wage and money-handling claims while saying payroll records were shared with the city labor office.
  • Community reaction was mixed with some patrons mourning the loss of a rare queer women–focused space and others criticizing management, raising broader questions about how accountability demands affect small, financially vulnerable LGBTQ+ venues.
