Marsha’s Opens on South Street as Philadelphia’s First Queer Women-Focused Sports Bar

The new venue answers a long-standing gap for queer, sapphic fans in a city long lacking a bar that centers women’s sports.

Overview

  • The bar held its grand opening on Sept. 19 at 430 South Street in the former Woolly Mammoth space, drawing a large crowd.
  • Owner Chivonn Anderson pursued the concept after struggling to find a Philly bar to show the 2019 Women’s World Cup final.
  • Named for Marsha P. Johnson, the space features a mural, stadium-style seating, pride and sports flags, and a Megan Rapinoe jersey.
  • Programming will routinely air WNBA playoff games, NWSL matches, and WTA tournaments across multiple TVs, alongside Eagles and Phillies games.
  • The venue welcomes all patrons while centering queer women, launching as only about 38 lesbian bars remain nationwide, according to The Lesbian Bar Project.
