Marseille and Lens Owners Say LFP No Longer Represents Clubs, Urge Governance Overhaul

They endorse a reform plan to replace the current setup with a partnership between professional clubs and the federation.

Overview

  • Frank McCourt and Joseph Oughourlian criticized the league’s leadership, calling its governance opaque and inefficient and accusing Vincent Labrune’s LFP of failing the clubs.
  • They cited a TV income shortfall, saying nearly €1 billion was promised in 2023 but about €700 million was delivered including international rights, and labeled the DAZN deal a fiasco with uncertainty over Ligue 1+ revenues.
  • Both owners backed a senators’ and FFF proposal to remodel governance around two partner entities, the professional clubs and the federation.
  • They stopped short of demanding Labrune’s resignation, saying any decision on his future should be made collectively by the clubs, and they are seeking support ahead of next week’s Ligue 1 meetings to renew club representatives.
  • Labrune’s camp dismissed the criticism as a false controversy, disputed the financial figures, said no club has defaulted, noted the LFP president’s pay was halved for 2025–2026, and argued he has consistently pursued governance reform.
