Marriott Ends Short-Term Buy-Points Sale With Tiered Bonuses

The promotion raised the temporary annual purchase cap to 200,000 points and could make buying points useful for members topping off accounts or reaching airline transfer thresholds.

Overview

  • Marriott’s buy-points sale closed on Wednesday, September 9, offering a common 40% bonus and a 50% bonus for purchases of 40,000 points or more, with some members seeing targeted higher offers.
  • Points were sold at a base rate of $12.50 per 1,000 points, which equates to about 0.83 cents per point under the 50% bonus, so buying only makes financial sense for specific redemptions or transfer goals.
  • For this sale only Marriott raised the standard annual buy limit to 200,000 points and members can still purchase up to an additional 100,000 points annually via the award-booking/reservation path.
  • Program rules require accounts to be at least 90 days old (30 days if there is prior activity), purchased points post within 72 hours, and purchased points do not count toward elite status.
  • Separately, Marriott opened registration for a stays promotion running September 22 through November 22 that pays 1,500 bonus points on stays of two or more nights and an extra 3,000 points for resort stays, with registration closing November 13.
