Mariola Sampedro Becomes Ribeira’s First Woman Mayor After Censure Vote

A PP pact with a breakaway local group ended the BNG-led coalition at a tense plenary.

Overview

  • Sampedro secured the mayoralty with 13 votes, combining the PP’s 10 councillors with support from three members of the Partido Barbanza Independiente (PBBI).
  • The tally exceeded the 11 votes needed to unseat BNG’s Luís Pérez Barral, who had governed since 2023 with backing from the PBBI and the PSOE.
  • Two PBBI councillors did not back the operation: Juan Luis Furones never signed the motion, and Tania Redondo became a non-attached councillor after alleging pressure, which the PP denies.
  • The censure follows a late-September rupture in which the PP and PBBI forced the BNG out of the local executive before the motion was formally filed in early October.
  • This is only the second censure motion in Ribeira’s democratic history, with the first attempt in 1989 failing when a promoter was absent.
