Marineland Seeks Emergency Federal Aid, Says 30 Belugas Face Euthanasia After Export Denial

The park set an Oct. 7 deadline, citing a cash crisis following Ottawa's rejection of a transfer to China.

Overview

  • In a letter obtained by CBC News, Marineland told Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson it is fully indebted and lacks resources to care for the whales.
  • The company warns it will euthanize the belugas if funding or export permits are not approved by Oct. 7.
  • Thompson earlier denied permits to send the whales to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, saying she opposes keeping them in captivity for entertainment.
  • Marineland says no seaside sanctuary exists and no other marine park has capacity to house the group.
  • Twenty whales have died at the facility since 2019, and Thompson's office did not immediately comment on the funding plea.
