Overview

  • Sgt. Maj. Jody Armentrout of the U.S. Marine Corps intervened after spotting a passenger attempting to open an emergency exit on All Nippon Airways Flight 114 from Tokyo to Houston on May 24.
  • Flight attendants supplied zip ties, which Armentrout used to restrain the passenger until the Boeing 787 diverted to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport for an emergency landing.
  • Port of Seattle police officers escorted the restrained passenger off the plane and he was transported to a local hospital for further medical evaluation.
  • Another traveler, angered by the unscheduled stop, punched a lavatory door on the tarmac and was also removed but not taken into custody.
  • As of May 30, no charges have been filed against either individual and the FBI is reviewing witness statements to determine if federal prosecution is warranted.
