Marie Curie Secures 16 Council Pledges to Waive Council Tax for Terminally Ill

The charity urges rapid rollout to ease bills for people facing terminal illness.

Overview

  • Manchester introduced council tax relief in the summer, and Barnsley followed last month with a 100% reduction for residents nearing end of life.
  • Bristol, Salford and Preston have committed to introduce exemptions, with schemes expected to go live soon.
  • A further 11 councils have passed motions to explore dedicated relief policies, including Newcastle, Wakefield, Wirral, Pendle, Newark and Sherwood, South Gloucestershire, Milton Keynes, Blackburn with Darwen, Liverpool, Burnley and Sheffield.
  • Marie Curie says many terminally ill people rely on benefits as their main income, and targeted council tax relief would offer significant support.
  • There is no national mandate, leaving adoption to local discretion, and the Local Government Association has been asked for comment as the campaign seeks wider uptake.
