Mareny de Barraquetes Beach Closed Again Over Fecal Contamination

Lab tests detecting enterococci at 560 per 100 milliliters have led the council to commission private firms to identify sewage outflows.

Overview

  • This closure is the second at Mareny de Barraquetes this season, following a June shutdown over similar fecal-bacteria exceedances.
  • Mayor Jordi Sanjaime said neither he nor the Mareny de Barraquetes council received timely notification of the water-quality results, exposing confusion in intergovernmental testing protocols.
  • The council’s newly contracted firm will sample key outflow points to distinguish between potential agricultural runoff, sewer leaks and stormwater contributions.
  • Other Valencian shores including Motilla, Les Palmeres, La Llastra and El Perelló have seen brief closures this summer when tests detected elevated enterococci or E. coli levels.
  • In Granada, Carchuna-Calahonda endured two closures and Salobreña lifted its bathing advisory on August 11 after improved lab results, yet local mayors and regional agencies continue to dispute sanitation responsibilities.
