March 2025 Offers Rare Celestial Events, Including Total Lunar Eclipse and Northern Lights
Skywatchers can look forward to a total lunar eclipse, a partial solar eclipse, and vibrant auroras as solar activity peaks this month.
- A total lunar eclipse, or 'blood moon,' will be visible across North and South America on March 13-14, with totality lasting approximately 65 minutes.
- A partial solar eclipse will occur at sunrise on March 29, visible in northeastern North America, eastern Canada, and parts of Europe.
- March offers exceptional opportunities to view the northern lights, with increased aurora activity due to Earth’s position during the solar maximum and the vernal equinox on March 20.
- Venus and a crescent Moon will create a striking conjunction in the western sky just after sunset on March 1, while Mars and Jupiter remain prominent throughout the month.
- The darkest evenings for stargazing will occur between March 22 and March 31, as the moon wanes toward its new phase on March 29.
