Marcelo Decall, Founder of Pasaporte, Dies at 64

His death closes a four-decade career that helped bring Córdoba pop and new wave to a wider audience and was publicly acknowledged by the national music institute.

Overview

  • The musician’s death was confirmed by his brother-in-law Pepe Angonoa and by the Instituto Nacional de la Música after he died Thursday while hospitalized in Unquillo for complications from a stroke he suffered months earlier.
  • In the months before his death Decall underwent successive hospital stays and rehabilitation, including at Hospital Tránsito Cáceres de Allende and the Vida Plena center, before being treated at the Instituto Modelo de Rehabilitación de Unquillo.
  • Decall founded Pasaporte with his brother Alan in 1984 and led the band through three 1980s albums—Fuerzas del interior, Estímulo and Simples canciones—that together sold about 30,000 copies, a remarkable figure for Córdoba’s scene at the time.
  • Beyond Pasaporte, he worked as a guitarist and arranger for cuarteto singer Pelusa, contributing songs such as “Whisky no” and “Exacto reloj,” the latter included on the 1985 album Teléfono azul.
  • INAMU issued an official farewell recognizing his contribution to Argentine music, and his death is expected to prompt local tributes and renewed interest in Pasaporte’s recordings and the history of Córdoba’s 1980s pop scene.
