Marcelo Castro and Júlio César Win Piauí’s Two Senate Seats

Victory gives the governor’s allied coalition control of both contested Piauí Senate seats.

Overview

  • Official tallies show Marcelo Castro (MDB) with about 1,285,913 votes (≈35.6%) and Júlio César (PSD) with about 973,959 votes (≈27.0%), securing the two available seats.
  • Incumbent Ciro Nogueira (PP) finished third with roughly 891,386 votes (≈24.7%) and failed to win re-election to the Senate.
  • Both winners ran on the slate allied with Governor Rafael Fonteles, a coalition made up of PT, MDB, PSD and other state-government partners.
  • Each victor will take an eight-year Senate term beginning in 2027 and ending in 2035, a result of the 2026 vote that allowed each elector to choose up to two candidates as two-thirds of seats were renewed.
  • Marcelo Castro, a physician and former health minister, returns for a third Senate term, and Júlio César moves from seven consecutive terms in the Chamber of Deputies to his first Senate term while Wellington Dias’s seat remains filled by suplente Jussara Lima during his ministerial leave.
