Marc Overmars Suspended for a Year in the Netherlands Over Inappropriate Messages
The former Ajax director's ban does not affect his current role as sporting director of Antwerp in Belgium.
- Marc Overmars, former director of football at Ajax, has been suspended from football activities in the Netherlands for one year due to inappropriate messages sent to female colleagues.
- The Instituut Sportrechtspraak (ISR), the Dutch disciplinary committee for sports federations, confirmed the suspension, which bans Overmars from holding any position within a Dutch Football Association-affiliated organisation for a mandated period of two years, one of which is suspended.
- Overmars, who had a distinguished playing career with Ajax, Arsenal, Barcelona and the Netherlands, apologised and expressed shame for his 'unacceptable' behaviour.
- Despite the ban, Overmars' current position as sporting director of Antwerp in Belgium is not affected.
- The ISR indicated that the suspension could be submitted to world football governing body FIFA for review.
