Mar del Plata Council Approves 30-Year Concession for Minella Stadium and Polideportivo

Under a municipal law exception the city can now unlock a US$40 million renovation of its flagship sports venues

El Minella hoy sólo se usa para partidos de Alvarado y Aldosivi, que no pagan por jugar allí.

Overview

  • The council voted to grant Minella Stadium SA a 30-year concession with a 10-year extension option and authorized Mayor Guillermo Montenegro to sign the contract
  • The concession covers the José María Minella Stadium, the Polideportivo Islas Malvinas and the common areas of the Parque Municipal de los Deportes
  • The consortium formed by Brazil’s Grupo Revee and Argentina’s Pro Enter has vowed to invest up to US$40 million to modernize the venues and stage 30–35 events annually at the stadium and 50–60 at the polideportivo under an AFA match-use agreement
  • Officials invoked Article 155 of Argentina’s Municipalities Law to deem the sole bid of “evidente conveniencia,” allowing the process to proceed without a second tender
  • Opposition blocs Unión por la Patria, Frente Renovador and Acción Marplatense opposed the deal over doubts about the single-bid process and its long-term financial viability
