Maple Leafs Send Marshall Rifai to Marlies on Conditioning Loan

The short-term AHL stint provides a controlled window to gauge his health after September wrist surgery.

Toronto announced the assignment on December 18, sending the 27-year-old defenseman to the Marlies on a conditioning loan.
Under conditioning-loan rules, he can play up to 14 days or five games without a permanent change to his NHL roster status.
Rifai has been on long-term injured reserve since sustaining a wrist injury in a Sept. 25 preseason game against Montreal and undergoing surgery.
A permanent reassignment would require waivers, and reporters note his one-way $775,000 contract through 2026-27 could help him clear if placed on them.
He recorded 13 points in 63 AHL games last season with the Marlies and has appeared in two NHL games in his career.
