Samsonov lost his role as Toronto's No. 1 goalie to Joseph Woll and if unclaimed, he would head to the Leafs' AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, to work through his issues.
Samsonov's $3.55 million cap hit makes it unlikely he would be claimed, and if sent to the minors, $1.15 million comes off their salary cap.
With Woll out with a high-ankle injury, veteran Martin Jones has taken over as the starter and the Leafs have considered calling up goalie prospect Dennis Hildeby.
