Maoists Kill Visiting Teacher in Bijapur, Latest in Bastar Attacks on Shikshadoots

Police link the killing to Maoist efforts to choke off newly revived village schooling.

Overview

  • Kallu Tati, 25, a local shikshadoot from Todka, was abducted Friday evening while returning from Lendra school and was found dead on Saturday, with police saying he was killed with sharp weapons.
  • Bastar police report a sustained pattern of targeting volunteer teachers on suspicion of being informers, with six such killings in 2025 and eight over the past two years.
  • A security team was sent to the site, and Inspector General P. Sundarraj condemned the attack and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice and intensify operations.
  • Officials and local accounts say reopened schools in remote areas have drawn Maoist reprisals, depressing attendance and stoking fear, with more than 30 civilian deaths in Bastar this year.
  • The Bijapur killing follows recent murders of shikshadoots on August 27 in Sukma and August 15 in Narayanpur, along with earlier cases in Bijapur and Dantewada since 2023.
