Maoists Kill Shikshadoot in Sukma Village, Bastar Civilian Toll Nears 30 This Year

The attack highlights the vulnerability of temporary teachers deployed to reopen remote schools in Maoist-affected areas.

Overview

  • Laxman Barse, 30, was dragged from his home in Silger on Wednesday evening and killed with sticks and a sharp-edged weapon, according to police.
  • Family members who intervened were assaulted, and Jagargunda police say an investigation and legal proceedings are underway.
  • Officials say the attackers suspected Barse of passing information to a nearby police camp, with villagers reporting about 20 assailants and a distance of roughly three kilometres from the post.
  • The killing follows earlier attacks on educators in Bastar, including two shikshadoots slain in Bijapur on July 14 and another teacher killed in Dantewada on February 19.
  • Barse had served as a temporary teacher for about 10–12 years and leaves a wife and two young children, as shikshadoots continue to seek life insurance and job security.
