Manson follower Leslie Van Houten granted parole after 50 years, court overrules Newsom

  • Van Houten has served over 50 years in prison for her involvement in two murders committed at the direction of Charles Manson.
  • Van Houten was 19 when she participated in stabbing to death Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in their home.
  • Van Houten has been recommended for parole five times since 2016, but each recommendation was rejected by Governor Newsom or former Governor Brown until now.
  • The court cited Van Houten's rehabilitation, remorse, and realistic parole plans as reasons to overturn Newsom's denial of her parole.
  • Newsom could still appeal the ruling to the California Supreme Court in an effort to keep Van Houten imprisoned.
