Manson follower Leslie Van Houten granted parole after 50 years, court overrules Newsom

Van Houten has served over 50 years in prison for her involvement in two murders committed at the direction of Charles Manson.
Van Houten was 19 when she participated in stabbing to death Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in their home.
Van Houten has been recommended for parole five times since 2016, but each recommendation was rejected by Governor Newsom or former Governor Brown until now.
The court cited Van Houten's rehabilitation, remorse, and realistic parole plans as reasons to overturn Newsom's denial of her parole.
Newsom could still appeal the ruling to the California Supreme Court in an effort to keep Van Houten imprisoned.
