Overview

  • Machado recorded his 2,000th hit with a sharp fourth-inning single off Zac Gallen that drew a standing ovation at Petco Park.
  • He became the fifth active player to reach the milestone, joining Freddie Freeman, Jose Altuve, Andrew McCutchen and Paul Goldschmidt among MLB hitters with at least 2,000 hits.
  • Later in the game he hit a solo home run—his 357th career long ball—and lifted his Padres total to 950 hits, ranking fifth in franchise history.
  • By achieving both 2,000 hits and 350 home runs before his age-32 season ended, Machado joined a 12-member club headlined by eight Hall of Famers.
  • With eight years remaining on his contract he needs roughly 115 hits per season to pursue baseball’s 3,000-hit plateau.
