Manitoba Flags Two Measles Exposure Sites in Winkler, Sets Sept. 19–20 Monitoring Dates

Health officials urge those present to verify their MMR protection.

Overview

  • Potential exposure at Winkler Medical Clinic, 344 First St., occurred on Aug. 28 from noon to 3 p.m., with symptom monitoring advised through Sept. 19.
  • Boundary Trails Health Centre emergency department exposure spanned Aug. 28 at 1:45 p.m. to Aug. 29 at 4:45 p.m.; monitor until Sept. 19 if present on Aug. 28 or Sept. 20 if present on Aug. 29.
  • Measles spreads through the air and can be transmitted from four days before to four days after rash onset, with symptoms appearing 7–21 days after exposure and starting with fever, cough, red eyes and mouth spots before a spreading rash.
  • People born in 1970 or later without vaccination or prior measles should get an MMR or MMRV dose promptly and reduce contact with others, particularly those with weakened immune systems, from days 5–21 after exposure.
  • Infants under six months, pregnant people and those who are immunocompromised should not receive the vaccine and should consult a health-care provider for preventive treatment, and public health may ask close contacts to isolate.
